Snow Knocks Out New Canaan's Power

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Thousands of homes were without power Sunday morning after wet and heavy snows, and town officials were not sure when it will be restored.

More than 3,500 Connecticut Light & Power customers in New Canaan were without electricity, Emergency Management Director Michael Handler said Sunday morning. Crews from utility and the town highway department had been out since daybreak clearing roads of downed trees and power lines.

CL&P cannot give town officials a reliable estimate as to when power would be back in town, Handler said, though it has said statewide restoration may take more than seven days. Many residents were without power for a week after Hurricane Irene. “Given the cold temperatures, our priority is to restore residential power,” Handler said.

Just as during the summer storm, the New Canaan Library will open at 11 a.m. to allow residents to charge their cellphones and other devices. The New Canaan YMCA is open so powerless residents can take showers. The town’s shelter at New Canaan Town Hall remains open.
