You may be sick of the snow and ice this winter, but Andy Eckman does not mind it at all. Eckman, general store manager at Keeler's True Value Hardware, says the drastic weather leads to more customers.
"January broke every record for January," Eckman said, "It's been tough keeping the good products on the shelves."
With all the snow, many items have been in high demand, especially the roof rake as people try to prevent their roofs from caving in. Keeler's ordered 120 roof rakes recently and sold all of them. But to help residents in need, Eckman and his fellow employees have been sending people to other stores with roof rakes in stock.
Other winter items Eckman listed as popular include ice melt, ice picks, logs, lanterns and shovels. The increased demand for shovels is due to many shovels breaking with the heavy snow.
The joy Eckman gets from winter is not all business: He often goes snowmobiling in upstate New York. This year, he has found more snow in Fairfield County than in his snowmobiling destination.
Keeler's is still stocking the shelves for winter, but Eckman says workers are thinking ahead and have ordered wet vacuums, sand and other supplies to deal with floods when the snow and ice melt.
"Just wait it will go from one bad thing to the next bad thing," Eckman said of the thaw.
