Linda and Ken Smith work at weeding and planting their Community Garden plot. Their crops will be tomatoes, zucchini and mini eggplants. The eggplants are "not bitter at all," Linda says. The Smiths won't be able to harvest their bounty til deeper into summer. "The people who plant peas, lettuce and strawberries," says Ken, "they come up a lot earlier." He explains that the soil has to be quite a bit warmer for tomatoes and the other vegetables they're planting. Usually, the Smiths say, they plant sunflowers along the perimeter of the garden's fence. But the old fence is supposed to be removed and so they haven't been able to. Lou Weinberg, Chair of the Community Garden, says the old fence comes down next week. We'll be looking for those leggy sunflowers!
