Simple Steps to Keep Your Yard Bear Free

If you leave your trash out or you have a birdfeeder in your yard, you're asking for bears to pay a visit, according to Chris Vann, wildlife biologist for the state Department of Environmental Protection.

With black bear sightings in towns like Redding, Bethel, Brookfield, Danbury, Greenwich, Ridgefield and Wilton, Vann says there is reason for residents in towns like Easton to beware of the bear. Although Easton has not yet had any reported sightings, there have been six in neighboring Redding.

Vann says it is important to make your yard unattractive and uninviting to the furry and not-so-cute-up-close animals. Make sure your trash is not left outside and if you have to leave it out, keep it secure and closed so bears cannot pick up on the scent. Birdfeeders are only recommended for use between November and March. This is especially important if you live in heavily wooded areas like Easton.
