Town officials approved one change to next months annual sidewalk sale, but they wouldnt sign off an another. Last week, the Police Commission approved the Chamber of Commerces request for to close portions of Main Street to vehicles during the sale. But at todays Board of Selectmen meeting, the board denied the chambers plan to move the Farmers Market from to the Morse Court Parking lot that weekend.
On July 17, local stores and restaurants will lie New Canaans sidewalks with booths offering special deals. As in previous years, the New Canaan Police will close down traffic on Elm Street between Main and Park Street, South Avenue from Elm Street to Morse Court, and Forest Street from East Avenue to Locust Avenue. This year, they will also close Main Street between Elm Street and East Avenue.
In the past, that area has been very, very, very congested, Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tucker Murphy said. This will open it up and create a better flow. And, it will be a lot safer for people to talk through.
The Chamber had also hoped to move the Farmers Market from its normal location at the Old Center School Parking Lot to the Morse Court Parking Lot or the day. The idea was to move the Market closer to the sidewalk sales, to make it easier for shoppers to visit both.
But the Board Of Selectmen denied the plan at its meeting Tuesday morning, citing parking concerns. Getabout had offered to run a shuttle service between the larger Center School lot and the village center, but a few retailer still thought there would be a bad response to closing the Morse Court lot. "There would have been not just two people, coming to us frustrated about parking, saying they don't want to get into a Getabout," said Selectman Rob Malozzi.
