Long-time Wilton resident Richard B. Elsberry passed away on August 7, 2010, after a lengthy illness. He was 77 years old. He and his wife, Patricia, had recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.
Mr. Ellsberry grew up in Minneapolis and attended the University of Minnesota, where he majored in journalism and engineering. He served two years in the Army, from 1955-57, and returned to what became a 31-year career in the News Bureau at General Electric. Retiring in 1985, he and Patricia spent a decade traveling the world (in Thailand, he rode an elephant). He was also a serious fisherman who made many of his own fly fishing lures. He caught rainbow trout in the White River, Ark., and salmon in upstate New York, and went deep-sea fishing from Florida. He often vacationed in the Wellfleet/Eastham area of Cape Cod where, his family says, he never met a book or a flea market he didn't like. He loved to read, especially science fiction, and collected classic pulp magazines.
Mr. Elsberry is survived by his wife, his son Christopher, sports columnist for the Connecticut Post, his daughters, Victoria, Sheryl and Kathleen, and grandchildren, Robyn, Lauren and Stephen. Friends may call on Wednesday, August 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Bouton Funeral Home, West Church Street, Georgetown, CT. Funeral services will be held Thursday at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Wilton. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Intensive Care Unit at Danbury Hospital, 24 Hospital Avenue, Danbury, CT 06810
