Second-Floor Burglars Strike Again in Darien

DARIEN, Conn. – Burglars who use ladders to gain access to the second story of unoccupied houses have hit another Darien house. This was the fifth in a string of burglaries that police say are connected.

The residents of a house on Hanson Road went out of town Friday, Dec. 9, and returned home the morning of Sunday, Dec. 11, to find that someone had rifled through the jewelry boxes in the master bedroom. An undetermined amount of jewelry was taken.

Police found markings from a vehicle in the back yard and said the thieves had climbed onto the roof of the house and entered through a skylight. After taking the jewelry, they placed an exercise bike under the skylight and climbed back out, replacing the glass behind them.

Other Darien houses have been robbed in the same manner in August, September, October and early December. In three incidents, the thieves cut holes into the side of the houses to gain access. Ladders were left behind at the houses in two cases.

The burglars appear to be targeting houses where it is obvious that the owners are not home, Darien Police Capt. Fred Komm said. He said if you plan to leave your house unoccupied, you should take precautions to make sure that it looks like someone is there. This includes stopping your mail or having it picked up, leaving a car parked in the driveway, putting lights on timers and not leaving garbage cans at the curb.
