Lindsey Schmid's long summer of softball ended just a few weeks ago. But she can't wait for it to start again. "I'm kind of deprived now,'' said Lindsey, who is entering her senior year at New Canaan High School.
She played center field for the Tradition South 16-and-under squad, which played in national tournaments in North Carolina and South Carolina. Lindsey also participated in several showcases, where college recruiters analyze players. The summer season followed the high school campaign in which she hit .414 with a home run, nine RBIs and six stolen bases. She struck out just seven times in 58 at-bats.
There is no secret to her success. She achieves it with unparalleled dedication. Before the season started with the Tradition, Lindsey worked out on her own while Tom Pia, the team's manager, coached Westhill High School to the Class LL championship. Her parents bought her a pitching machine, and she hits in the back yard. "I put my brother (Andrew, 14) out there, and he catches them,'' Lindsey said.
She competed in sailing and basketball before focusing solely on softball. Lindsay is determining several choices for her future. She would love to return to play with the girls on The Tradition, which she said was the closest team on which she has played. "When you all love the same thing, it's like a family,'' Lindsey said.
She's also figuring out college plans: She would like to play for a college in the Boston area. "I don't want softball taking over my life,'' Lindsey said. "I want to be able to balance it with academics."
