The 19th-century mansion on University Place in Schenectady, packed with period charm, hidden staircases, and more carved wood than a small forest, changed hands this month for $310,000, according to property records.
The 3,440-square-foot home, located steps from Union College, sold Friday, Nov. 14, nearly six months after it first hit the market at $485,000. The final sale price came in a full $175,000 under asking.
The listing, represented by Lake Homes Realty, described the four-bedroom, three-bathroom residence as a “historic stone Victorian mansion” ready to be restored to its “shine and glory.”
And the photos made the case: a sweeping stone archway leading to a wraparound porch, a turret capped with a cone-shaped roof, dramatic coffered ceilings, pocket doors, stained-glass windows, and intricate woodwork throughout.
Inside, a grand staircase with a carved newel-post statue anchors the foyer, while chandeliers, beveled glass windows, and cherry hardwood floors add to the home’s old-world atmosphere.
The second floor includes four bedrooms, two full bathrooms, two half baths, and a balcony overlooking Union College’s fields.
Other features include a hidden staircase, gas fireplaces, a butler’s pantry, and a detached two-car garage topped with a bonus space—complete with a private entrance—waiting to be finished.
But as the listing made clear, the new owner has their work cut out. The property “is in need of rehab/restoration,” with the kind of projects only a dedicated renovator (or a brave HGTV contestant) would tackle.
