Gals can get stylish cuts while helping kids who suffer medical hair loss Sunday at New Canaan's Salon 126. The shop's staff will cut hair Sunday as part of its Cuts For A Cause initiative. Co-owners Lisa Roina and her husband, Ralph, are working with Kids Helping Kids, a kids-run non-profit that helps others while building leadership skills.
"It's a double whammy," Roina said. "[Customers] get a haircut and the money goes to help kids."
Jennifer Kelley, founder and director of Kids Helping Kids, said the kids will run the salon from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday -- the stylists will be the only adults in the shop. All proceeds from the day will go to Locks Of Love, a non-profit that provides hairpieces to disadvantaged children in the U.S. and Canada suffering from long-term medical hair loss.
The Kids will serve beverages, mark how much money has been raised and give visitors information about alopecia areata, the condition that causes children to lose their hair, Kelley said.
"It's all about educating people, and collectively they find out how to help people," Kelley said. "Our whole mission is to create leaders of middle and high school students through service learning. "
As of Friday, 50 people had appointments, Roina said. She's hoping more will sign up or drop in to get a good look and aid a worthy cause. "It's a great opportunity to support Locks Of Love," Roina said. "We were really successful last year and we hope we're successful this year." The salon is located at 126 Main St.
