Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. of Brooklyn, New York, is voluntarily recalling its Starfish Seafood Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon Sliced over possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The FDA posted the company announcement on its website.

The affected 8-ounce packages were distributed in NY, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida, Georgia, and Ohio, according to the FDA-posted company announcement.

Consumers should look for frozen, vacuum-sealed packages of Starfish Seafood Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon Sliced. The packages have UPC code 4751048940099 and a product code reading: Best before 27.11.2027, lot D080-148.

The smoked salmon was imported from Latvia.

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets identified the potential contamination through product sampling.

Krasnyi Oktyabr, a wholesale distributor that did not make the product, initiated the recall and is cooperating with the state agency and the FDA.

Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems, according to the company announcement.

Healthy people may develop high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. The infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

No illnesses connected to the recalled salmon had been reported as of Sunday, Oct. 18.

Consumers who purchased the affected product should not eat it. They should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Consumers can direct questions to Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. at 718-858-6720 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday.
