Bill Davidson had a lot of work to do Monday. With the weather becoming warm and staying that way, he figured it was time to get his new sailboat, Moondancer, ready for a summer on Long Island Sound. Thats why he headed down to Fairfields South Benson Marina.
Ive only had it this year, Davidson said of his new vessel. Im still learning about it. South Benson Marina is one of the two harbors operated by the town for residents, along with Ye Yacht Yard in Southport. Davidson says he prefers the port farther east for two reasons: its safety and its location. He says its less hurricane-prone than other docks, so he will worry less about Moondancer during storms. And South Bensons location at the mouth of Ash Creek means he can get out and let the sails out quicker.
Ive been in this marina now for over 40 years, Davidson said. Its one of the best little harbors in Connecticut, I think.
Davidson wasnt the only one starting off the spring season on the water. The Fairfield Police Departments Marine Unit was preparing one of its Boston Whalers as well. Out of its base in South Benson Marina, the unit is getting ready for more activity along the shoreline. Throughout the year, it helps stranded boaters and sinking ships.
If youre interested in getting out on the water but aren't sure how, Fairfield has two options for those who want to learn. The Parks and Recreation department hosts classes at the Postol Recreation Center on Mill Plain Road every Thursday night, covering sailing safety and how to handle emergencies. And the U.S. Coast Guards Flotilla 77, based on Fairfields shore, also has courses on weekends that award Safe Boating Certificates. The next session is Sunday, May 15, starting at 9 a.m.
And if you dont have your own boat, Fairfield has an option for you as well. Residents can join Community Sailing of Fairfield. As long as you have a Safe Boating Certificate and you pass a sailing safety test, you can sign up for access to one of its two 18-foot sailboats and six kayaks for two-hour blocks.
