Temperatures hit a high of 92 degrees in Rye Wednesday. Unfortunately for many local students, they have mostly been sitting in classrooms with no air conditioning.
"The second floor kills us," said Ilier Biga, 14, a freshman at Rye High School.
Most of the school's classrooms do not have A/C units, though Ilier said the high school's portables are cooled.
For him, summer vacation doesn't only mean no homework for three months, but no more sweating in class too.
After the heat subsided Wednesday evening, Margaret Schneider took her two sons, Emil, 9, and Olaf, 6, out for a walk around City Hall. Both her children go to Osborn School, where the classrooms are cooled with portable fans. Third-grader Emil said he would rather be outside.
"The kids can survive," said Schneider.
But the students at Milton School haven't had to worry because their facilities are fully air-conditioned.
The heat will return Thursday with a high expected of 92 degrees. Temperatures will drop down to 80 degrees and lower over the weekend with chance showers expected throughout.
