Rye Mom Publishes Children's Book

RYE, N.Y. – Rye’s Susanne Macke isn’t your average stay-at-home mom. Besides being one of the area’s resident couponing queens, the German-native Midland School mother of two is also a children’s author. Macke’s book “Does Grandma Live in Heaven Now?” helps children cope with the loss of an elderly loved one.

“When my best friend’s grandmother died in Germany, and I was looking to get a book for her daughter because she was really sad, but I couldn’t really find what I was looking for,” Macke said. “I wanted something that talked about still being connected to the Grandma, and God, and Heaven, so I decided to write one myself.”

Macke first self published the book in a copy shop in Germany in 2004, and her friend’s daughter loved it so much that she brought it into school where it caught the eye of the Principal.

“He brought it to a principal conference in Munich and then I got all of those orders, and that’s how it started,” Macke said. “Most of the nursery schools in Germany bought them, so it sold out early.”

However it wasn’t until one of Switzerland’s biggest children’s bookstores gave a Macke a call that she added publisher to her resume.

“They ordered some but I still had my copy shop copies, so I had to do something,” Macke said. “So I founded my own publishing company.”

In Germany Macke was a kinesiology professor who spent a lot of time helping children deal with family loss.

“It kind of all came together,” Macke said. “I have a page at the end with tips on how to help your child mourn, heal and remember.”

You can find Macke’s book at Arcade Booksellers in downtown Rye and online at Amazon.com.
