NORWALK, Conn. The keys are no longer being pounding on by the late Norwalk celebrity, but one of Andy Rooney's typewriter's is still serving a good purpose nevertheless.
Steve Soboroff, a California collector who bought the late "60 Minutes" commentator's typewriter in early March, said it has been to the "typewriter M.D." and is now raising money for children's programs.
Soboroff bought one of the writer's prized Underwood Number 5s at the Rooney family's Rowayton estate sale without even leaving California. He randomly chose a real estate agent to call after reading about the sale online, accidentally making contact with one of Rooney's neighbors. That neighbor, Chris Buswell, went to the sale early the next morning and made a deal with Elizabeth Jackson, the estate sale's organizer.
The typewriter was promptly shipped to California but it isn't cooped up in the collector's home. It is now in the Malibu Public Library raising funds for scholarships and was also at the library's grand opening, Soboroff said. It has been at Rotary Club of Los Angeles, one of the largest Rotaries in the world, to raise money for their children's programs. A public radio segment on the topic has also been recorded and will air May 19.
