The $500 will go directly to support our fifth-graders' trip to Nature's Classroom next year," said Rogers PTO President Belinda Basile, who accepted the check with fourth-grader Gabby Hernandez and second-grader Griffin Makovsky. The school was awarded the Thank You gift for having at least 100 email addresses register on the online news site.
Rogers International School has made a habit of winning awards for everything from its academic excellence to its green building. Now, it can add the $500 from the Better Schools Bonanza promotion from Main Street Connect, the parent company of TheDailyStamford.com online community news source.Rogers moved to its architecturally stunning new complex on Blachley Road barely two years ago after being housed in an older downtown building for 30 years.
One of the first awards for the school was a Silver LEED designation, for its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The 105,000-square-foot building includes a green roof; ice storage for heating, ventilation and air conditioning; a rain garden; a wind turbine; and water-saving technologies.
Rogers is an interdistrict magnet school that offers the International Baccalaureate program and is funded by the state. As such, at least 25 percent of its student body must come from other towns. There are currently students from Stamford, Darien, Weston, Norwalk and Ridgefield enrolled.
"I'm extremely proud that we were the first recipient of the Annual Fairfield County Academic Gain Award from the Lone Pine Foundation," Principal Cathy Cummings said. "After a comprehensive screening process, we were judged to have made the greatest academic gain in student achievement of all schools in the county."
