The 79-year-old's death happened at his home in Nevada on Sunday, April 19.
"After cooking an amazing dinner with his beloved wife Winifred, he sat down to take a nap with sweet Star (the Maltese) at his feet," a statement on Mason's Facebook page read. "He passed away peacefully, in his favorite chair, surrounded by the beautiful Carson Valley that he loved so much. A storybook ending. On his own terms. Which is how he lived his life right up until the end."
Mason, whose career spanned more than six decades, was best known for writing the classic "Feelin' Alright?" and his 1977 solo hit "We Just Disagree."
Mason formed Traffic in 1967 alongside Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, and Chris Wood. Though his time with the group was brief, his contributions included writing several iconic tracks, including "Feelin' Alright?," which became a signature hit for Joe Cocker.
After leaving Traffic, Mason launched a successful solo career with his debut album Alone Together, known for its psychedelic rock sound and marble-colored vinyl.
Nicknamed the "Forrest Gump of Rock," Mason collaborated extensively with some of music’s biggest legends. He famously played 12-string guitar on Jimi Hendrix’s "All Along the Watchtower" and worked with The Rolling Stones, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Fleetwood Mac, and others. In the mid-1990s, he briefly joined Fleetwood Mac, contributing to their 1995 album Time.
Mason’s 1977 hit "We Just Disagree" remains one of his most beloved songs, showcasing his distinctive voice and heartfelt lyrics. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 as a member of Traffic.
In 2024, Mason released his memoir, Only You Know & I Know, chronicling his storied career and collaborations. He retired from touring in 2025 due to health concerns, canceling his final shows, as reported by Daily Voice.
Mason’s influence on rock music is immeasurable, and his songs continue to resonate with fans around the world.
He is survived by his family, friends, and countless fans who will remember him as one of rock’s most enduring legends.
