Road Construction on Route 202 Delayed

CORTLANDT MANOR—It took 12 years to secure funding for roadwork on Lafayette Avenue and Route 202, which would add traffic lights and left turn lanes to the heavily trafficked two lane road, but it will have to wait a little bit longer.

“We are displeased,” said Town of Cortlandt Supervisor Linda Puglisi about the three to four week delay the project has already incurred.

Construction has been delayed on the project because of state requirements that a certain number of subcontractors be Disadvantaged Business Enterprises, which essentially requires a certain number of bids to go to women and minority businesses.

The project is a cooperation between three parties. The contractor, the Town of Cortlandt, which will monitor the project and awarded the bid to the contractor, and the New York State Department of Transportation, which is funding the project.

While the state scrutinizes the awarded contractor, Puglisi and other Town of Cortlandt board members, including Hudson Valley Hospital Cardiologist Richard Becker, anxiously await the start of the project, in hopes that further delays won't leave a construction site open over the winter.

The $2.8 million project will add stoplights to Conklin and Lafayette Avenues, and will realign the hospital’s exit with Lafayette Avenue. The project will also add left turn lanes onto Conklin Avenue and Route 202. The ground breaking for the project was May 25, and work was anticipated to start three to four weeks later.
