RIDGEFIELD, Conn. Summerfest 2012, boosted by glorious sunny comfortable weather, drew hundreds of town residents who visited booths sponsored by businesses, community groups and political campaigns, munched on hot dogs and other treats and enjoyed free music on a small stage near Bailey Avenue.
The event has been expanded from a sidewalk sale to an arts and culture festival, said Marion Roth, executive director of the Ridgefield Chamber of Commerce, which sponsored the event.
The event continued all afternoon, leading up to a 7 p.m. concert at Ballard Park featuring Roosevelt Dime.
Before the concert a live auction took place for the top chairs in the Chair-ish Ridgefield event. More than 60 colorful chairs, decorated by local businesses and individuals were auctioned off throughout the day with the top chairs auctioned live before the concert.
Susie Buckley, a Ridgefield resident, decorated one of the top chairs. It features a Maurice Sendak illustration, she said. Sendak is the recently deceased childrens book illustrator who lived in Ridgefield.
The money raised from the Chair-ish auction will support Destination Ridgefield, a Chamber of Commerce campaign to promote Ridgefield tourism, Roth said.
Tommy the Tutor, The Tutoring Clubs mascot, entertained children at the event as a representative of the business gave away free pencils.
