The scam ended with the arrest of Richard Francisco Perozo Rodriguez, 28, of Wyandanch, in Muttontown on Friday, Sept. 18, according to Nassau County Police.

The woman received a call from someone claiming to be a police officer, detectives said. The caller told her that her daughter had been arrested and needed cash for bail.

Instead of handing over the money, the woman realized she was being scammed and contacted police, according to the department.

Detectives launched an investigation and arrested Rodriguez at about 9:05 a.m. as he attempted to pick up the payment, police said.

Rodriguez was charged with attempted third-degree grand larceny. He was scheduled to be arraigned Saturday, Sept. 19, at First District Court in Hempstead.

Investigators believe there could be other victims.

Anyone who believes they may have been targeted by Rodriguez is asked to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
