FAIRFIELD, Conn. A piece of Fairfields history soon will be restored to its former glory.
The Fairfield Museum and History Center has announced it has received money to finish work on the Sun Tavern, a part of Fairfields historic Town Green.
The building sits behind Old Town Hall, across the road from the Old Academy. It was first built in 1780 and once may have hosted President George Washington during a visit to Fairfield in 1789.
The museum, formerly the Fairfield Historical Society, has been maintaining the Sun Taverns current condition for the town. With a grant from the Fidelity-St. Johns Lodge Number 3 of The Grand Lodge of Free Masons, the group will remove the last remnants of lead paint from the structure, opening it up for public tours and events.
The Masons lodge, up the street from the site on Beach Road, donated the last money needed as part of the 250th re-dedication ceremony for their temple.
The Sun Tavern is a significant part of our history and we are very glad to be able to make this contribution, said Worshipful Master of the Lodge Chris Jennings. Our forefathers met at The Sun Tavern in 1809 and we have learned that our first president, George Washington, also a Mason, might have stayed at the Sun Tavern.
