Report: Armonk's IBM Voted Second Most Respected Company

ARMONK, N.Y. – The Armonk-based computer mega company IBM was named the second most respected company in the world, according to a survey of business investors conducted by Barron’s financial newspaper.

For the second year in a row, the Armonk computer company placed in the top five in the survey, moving up from number four last year.  The survey, released on June 23, asked 116 investors to give a response of their respect for the 100 largest companies in the world.  Those surveyed had the choice of four responses: highly respect, respect, respect somewhat and don’t respect.  Of those surveyed, 47 percent said they highly respect IBM, with only 1 percent responding with don’t respect.  IBM was just behind Apple as the most respected company, which 71 percent of those surveyed said they respect highly.

According to Barron’s, participants in the survey said strong management and sound business strategy were the most important characteristics for a business.

Fellow Westchester corporation PepsiCo took a big slide down the list from last year’s survey.  The Purchase-based beverage company that was ranked ninth in last year’s survey came in this year at number 30.  Barron’s reporter Michael Santoli cited management problems as a reason for PepsiCo’s drop.

IBM holds its headquarters on New Orchard Road in Armonk.  In January, the company appointed Virginia Rometty as its new CEO, taking over for Samuel Palmisano.  Rometty is the first female CEO in the company’s 100 year history.
