"This statement is wrong," Lawler, who represents New York's 17th congressional district, which covers Rockland County, Putnam County and parts of Westchester and Dutchess counties, said on social media.
"Regardless of one’s political views, no one should be subjected to violence, let alone at the hands of their own son," Lawler said. "It’s a horrible tragedy that should engender sympathy and compassion from everyone in our country, period."
Trump posted about Reiner's death hours after the 78-year-old and his wife were found fatally stabbed in their home. Reiner's son, Nick, has been reportedly charged with their murder.
"Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS," Trump wrote.
While investigators haven't released a motive for the killings, Trump implied that the director of "The Princess Bride" and "This Is Spinal Tap" was killed for criticizing him.
"He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before," Trump wrote. "May Rob and Michele rest in peace!"
Earlier, Lawler paid tribute to Reiner, remembering the director of classic films like "Misery," "A Few Good Men," and "When Harry Met Sally."
"Rob Reiner was an iconic actor, director, and producer," Lawler said. "He directed some of my favorite films, including "A Few Good Men" and "The American President." Rob and his wife Michele’s death is a tragedy and heartbreaking. May their memory always be a blessing — his legacy will endure.
Lawler could be one of the most vulnerable Republicans in next year's midterms, representing a district Vice President Kamala Harris won in 2024. The Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan election handicap site, lists the race as "Lean Republican."
