The proposed budget for the 2013-14 school year is $76.7 million, a 4.32 percent increase over the previous year's budget of $73.5 million. If the budget is passed, the tax levy would increase 4.65 percent and the tax rate would increase 4.59 percent. In order to keep the budget under the state's tax levy cap, the district was forced to cut $2.3 million from the budget. These cuts affect 27 employees. If passed, 21 full-time district employees would lose their jobs.
There are two open seats on the Board of Education, and three candidates looking to fill them. Incumbent Katy Keohane Glassberg is running for re-election. Former Board member Bob Zahm is looking to re-join, and newcomer Nicole Weber is running for the first time.
Voting will take place from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the gymnasium at Rye Middle School, 3 Parsons St.
