Rell Nixes Pay Raises for Some Managers

Non-union managers at UConn's Stamford campus looking for a pay raise may be disappointed. Gov. M. Jodi Rell is asking trustees of the state's public institutions of higher learning to reject proposed increases. Rell's request would affect, in addition to UConn, the Connecticut State University System as well as Connecticut's community colleges.

Proposed salary increases range from just below 5 percent to 5.7 percent–and that's just too much when Connecticut is trying to cope with "an extraordinarily painful recession in which our state lost 100,000 jobs," Rell said in a release her office issued July 15. She said pay increases would make for higher operating costs, which in turn would result in higher tuition bills.

"Tuition bills have already gone up at all three systems–UConn, the CSUS and the community-technical colleges," said Rell. "These salary increases would only add to the operating costs of every campus, making future tuition increases all the more likely. That is a burden that students and their families cannot afford right now."
