NORWALK, Conn. -- Darien and Norwalk are very different towns when it comes to state and federal representation. Although both have one congressman, Darien has one state representative and two state senators, while Norwalk has five state representatives and one state senator. Ever wonder WHY Connecticut towns are split so many different ways?
Every decade the state legislature appoints a bi-partisan reapportionment committee, made up of an equal number of Democrats and Republicans. The committee looks at Connecticut's population changes and adjusts district borders to ensure that each resident is given proper representation. (More information is available online.)
We are fortunate to host one of the public hearings for the reapportionment committee, and I want to encourage you to take advantage of this unique opportunity to bring your thoughts forward on how our communities are represented at the state and federal levels.
The hearing is:
Monday, July 18, at 7 p.m.
Norwalk City Hall, Common Council Chambers
125 East Ave.
Whether you have specific input on how Darien or Norwalk should be divided among state and federal legislators, or if you are just curious to see the process the reapportionment committee uses to make specific changes, this should be a great way to get a behind-the-scenes look at the 2011 Redistricting Project.
I hope you are having a great summer!
Best,
Terrie Wood
State Representative
141st District: Darien, Rowayton
