Records Fall as Roxbury Swimmers Win Title

STAMFORD, Conn. – Brothers William and Jack Montesi set county records to lead Roxbury Swim Club to the team title Monday at the Fairfield County Swimming League Division 1 championship. Long Ridge swimmer Jeff Anderson also had a banner day, winning three individual races. The meet was held at Innis Arden Country Club in Old Greenwich.

Roxbury, which has won 17 FCSL championships since 1991, had 1,375.5 points. Rocky Point was second, followed by Newfield of Stamford with 653.5. Long Ridge finished seventh.

William Montesi took down a 31-year-old record in the boys 8-and-under butterfly, swimming 17.03. The previous record was 17.15 by Dwight Fenton. Jack Montesi set a new mark in the boys 12-and-under 100 individual medley, breaking a record that had stood since 1988. He swam 1:09.51. Nick Handali of Newfield also broke the old record of 1:10.63. Handali swam 1:09.94 to claim second.

Rocky Point swimmers Gretchen Walsh (girls 8-and-under 25 butterfly and 25-meter freestyle) took out two county records, including one that had stood since 1977.

Anderson, a rising senior at Westhill High School, won the boys 17-and-under 50-meter breaststroke, the 100-meter medley and the 100-meter freestyle.

"Things went pretty much as I expected,'' said Roxbury coach Rick Lewis, whose team will try to win the open championship Saturday in the season-ending meet at Roxbury. "I thought we had the upper hand. Today's performances set us up pretty well for Saturday."

William Montesi also won the backstroke and freestyle for Roxbury. Jack Montesi also won the backstroke in his age group. Roxbury's other champions included Alex Li, Robert Peterson, Ben Ehret, Matias Esquival, Corrine Gaccione, Gillian Giangrande, Josh Furth and Robert Peterson.

The surprise team of the meet may have been Newfield. After going 3-3 in the regular season, Newfield came in third, splashing past Riverside Yacht Club and Middlesex. A victory in the second race of the day, the girls 17-and-under medley relay, kick-started Newfield's run. The relay team included Elizabeth Kearney, Caroline Kearney, Rhyan Brode and Jenna Handali.

Individual winners for Newfield included Brode (12-and-under butterfly, backstroke and freestyle), Nick Handali (12-and-under breaststroke and freestyle) and Elizabeth Kearney (girls 14-and-under 50-meter backstroke). "We're happy with how we did,'' Newfield coach David Fine said. "Hopefully a lot kids will make the meet on Saturday."

Anderson was Long Ridge's only winner. It was his final Division 1 meet. Saturday's competition will be his last meet of the summer. "It's exciting and a little bit emotional,'' Anderson said. "Winning three races in one of my last meets is a nice feeling."
