These stories are in date order, not in importance. • The two-day search for 23-year-old Alex Bergman ended in tragedy when the Ridgefield Police Department found him in the pool of a home he had been visiting on Ridgebury Road. Local police were joined by Connecticut and New York state police, as well as emergency personnel from surrounding towns. Bergman had grown up in nearby North Salem, N.Y. and had been working in New Jersey. • It was a shock for many to hear Ridgefield resident Brian Schiavetti, 21, had been shot and killed in New Jersey. The New Jersey State Police quickly identified and charged New Jersey resident Ernest Williams with the crime. Schiavetti had been working as an intern at Thompson Reuters at the time of his death. • The Ridgefield Library was thrilled to begin the 16- to 18-month project of renovating and rebuilding the historical site on Main Street. The library moved to its temporary location at Governor Street and started its new extended hours. • Ridgefield residents came out to search for David Riek and ultimately support his family when the two days search ended in sadness. Nearly 600 volunteers turned out to search for Riek, including many of his friends from all over the Eastern Seaboard. • When Hurricane Sandy hit to Ridgefield, few residents were surprised by the storm, but that didn't stop the entire town from losing power. It took more than a week for everyone in town to have their power restored and cost the school’s a week of classes. • Residents vehemently spoke out when discussion started about possibly closing one of Ridgefield’s six elementary schools. Parents urged the school board not to close a school and to find savings in other places. • Many showed up to give their opinion to several public meetings when there was a possibility the town would allow a cell tower in the Old Stagecoach Road open space. The conservation commission shut down that possibility, but First Selectman Rudy Marconi said there was a possible private deal being made. • Three days after the country was shocked by the shootings at Sandy Hook, Ridgefield had a scare when the schools were locked down as police searched for a suspicious man. Police found a Redding man had dressed in all black and wore his umbrella like a samurai sword across his back and charged him with breach of peace.
