At first glance, REBEL might seem an unlikely name for a Baroque music ensemble.Though it sounds like a we'll-do-it-our-way kind of musical challenge, instead, the name commemorates the group's affection for French composer, Jean-Fery Rebel (1666-1747). On Feb. 6 at 3 p.m., this uniquely named and very talented ensemble performs at Southport's Pequot Library. Local Public Radio personality David Bouchier, whose weekly program, "Sunday Matinee" examines different musical styles and performances, is host. The Pequot Library event is presented by the Westport Arts Center and features the ensemble's performance of Irregular Pearls, which is described as "an accessible, delightful program of music" of several well-known Baroque-era composers. Westchester-based, REBEL's members, Karen Marie Marmer on violin, Jorg-Michael Schwarz, also on violin, harpsichordist Dongsok Shin, Mathias Maute on recorder or transverse flute and cellist John Moran, spent 12 years as artists in residence at New York City's famed Trinity Church on Wall Street. In 1999, they were chosen to receive an artists residency at National Public Radio, an award that had never been given before. The Boston Globe called REBEL, "...vital...dashing...with performances that lacked nothing in inwardness, charm or brilliance as required."
