The following letter to the editor was submitted by Mary Flaherty of New Canaan. The Daily New Canaan welcomes the opinions of its readers.
Why I support [Board of Finance member] Paul Giusti for first selectman:
? Paul has the skills needed to save tax dollars while maintaining educational excellence. He has earned the respect of members of the Board of Education and created savings outside the classroom (such as reducing recurring energy and transportation costs).
? New Canaan faces the same spiraling benefit obligations as the private sector. Paul successfully negotiated with our Public Works department to implement a 401(k) plan for new employees that will save hundreds of thousands of dollars over time.
? Paul supports a long-range plan to bring our facilities into ADA compliance. New Canaanites will either come up with a solution of our own making or a solution will be forced upon us. More importantly, our disabled neighbors deserve and have a right to fully participate in our community.
? Getting there requires hard work. Paul has the energy and drive it will take to preserve our quality of life during these tough economic times.
