The borough's water supply is provided primarily from borough wells, supplemented by a long-term contract with United Water. "With finite natural resources and all neighboring communities looking to meet their residents' water usage demands, water conservation becomes an essential part of life in our communities," officials note.
From May 1 to Sept. 30, automatic lawn, garden and landscape watering is only permitted as follows:
- For properties east of railroad tracks, watering is permitted on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.
- For properties west of the railroad tracks, watering is permitted on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.
- On those days, for in-ground installed water systems, watering shall be from 4-7 a.m. For above-ground watering systems, watering shall be from 4-8 p.m.
- Watering by hand-held hoses is permitted on all days.
There are a couple exceptions. Commercial nurseries are exempt, and those with newly-installed sod or seed lawns can water them Saturday through Thursday for two weeks after installation, with written notice provided to the Borough's Department of Public Works.
Failure to comply with the ordinance can result in receiving a summons.
"Thank you for your cooperation during this normally high consumption period which will enhance our chances of not introducing a ban on outdoor watering," officials note.
