Ramsey Officials Consider Culling Deer

RAMSEY, N.J. — A growing population of local deer could prompt officials to pursue the borough's first culling program within the next two years, northjersey.com reported.

Ramsey officials are looking to stem the rise in the borough's deer population.

If approved, professional hunters will be hired to systematically trim the population to reduce traffic accidents, property damage and spread of tick-borne diseases, the report says.

Humane alternatives to hunting and culling — such as deer birth control — have appeared uneconomical and ineffective, according to officials.

"Culling is the only viable way to control the population," Borough Mayor Deirdre Dillon told northjersey.com. "It’s unfortunate, but it’s what we need to do."
