The varsity football Class L state semifinals are set. The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference announced the times and venues of eight semifinal games from the four classes. The sixth-seeded Rams will take on second-ranked Daniel Hand at West Haven High School on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students.
After a stellar defensive display on a muddy field to defeat Nautagtuck 21-12 on Tuesday, New Canaan will take its shot to return to the state finals for the fifth straight year. The Rams' opponent, Daniel Hand, eked out a 19-7 win over North Haven to set up the match against New Canaan. Hand has as rich a football tradition as New Canaan, with nine state championships and 15 appearances in the title game. Hand's last trip to the finals was in 2007, where it was defeated by New Canaan 34-30.
Darien will take on top-ranked Masuk in the other Class L semifinal at 2 p.m. in Shelton. The Blue Wave handled Wethersfield easily, 31-7 in the state quarterfinal.
Two other FCIAC teams remain alive in their state tournaments. No. 3 Trumbull will take on No. 2 Norwich Free Academy in the Class LL semifinals at 2 p.m. on Saturday in West Haven. In the Class S semifinal, St. Joseph moved on to face first-seeded Valley Regional/Old Lyme at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The biggest upset of Tuesday's quarterfinals was in Class M where No. 8 Hillhouse upended top-ranked Berlin, 33-30.
