One of the key players on New Canaan High School's 2006 FCIAC champion baseball team could be on the path to professional baseball in the coming days. Curt Casali, class of 2007, has garnered the attention of several Major League teams as a catcher out of Vanderbilt.
Casali is projected to go sometime in the top 10 rounds, with some scouting websites predicting him to be picked in the seventh or eighth round. Baseballdraftreport.com suggests Casali may even be taken in the fifth round or higher. He underwent Tommy John surgery on his elbow in 2009, which may hurt his draft status.
Casali was a baseball All-American his senior year and also quarterbacked the Rams football team to the first of its four consecutive state championships in 2006. Casali lettered in three sports: baseball, football and basketball.
Vanderbilt is ranked fourth in the country and is currently battling for a spot in the College World Series. Casali's teammates include fellow Connecticut native and 2011 draft prospect Jason Esposito (Amity High School) and Mike Yastrzemski, grandson of Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski. Casali's younger brother Andrew is the starting shortstop for the current New Canaan High baseball team.
The 2011 MLB First Year Amateur Draft begins at 7 p.m. Monday. The first and compensatory rounds will air live on MLB Network and MLB.com.
