MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- Any respectable Harry Potter fan knows that a little rain wont stop a game of Quidditch -- though a couple of Dementors or the return of the Heir of Slytherin might. But with none of those around, Brian Weeks and his muggle Quidditch team played through the rain Monday at the Quidditch exhibition game held by the Bedford Hills Free Library.
I think its going to be more fun in the rain, Weeks said prior to the start of the game, which pitted the Mount Kisco Manticores against the Bedford Hills Blast-Ended Skrewts.
Weeks said that the match between kids from the neighboring towns wasnt for bragging rights, just for fun.
Theres no rivalry," he said. "If it was Slytherin vs. Gryffindor thered be more of a rivalry."
Quidditch is fictional sport invented by author J.K. Rowlings in her immensely popular Harry Potter series, where wizard players fly on brooms and try to score points by throwing a ball through a set of hoops.
The muggle version -- for non-wizards -- has the same concept, minus the flying.
The International Quidditch Association, a nonprofit organization that promotes the sport, donated the brooms used in the game and a number of other accessories after Kathy Storfer, who is in charge of programming at the Bedford Hills Free Library contacted him when planning the event with her son Daniel.
We always do something when the Harry Potter movies come out and this is the end of an era so we wanted to do something big, Storfer said. Its continuing the magic in a whole different way.
The game was accompanied by a bake sale with proceeds going to the Bedford Hills Free Library, which is facing a 10 percent budget cut.
In the end, the Bedford Hills Blast-Ended Skrewts beat out the Mount Kisco Manticores by a score of 180 to 50.
