Attention merchants: The Westport Planning and Zoning Commission has extended a measure suspending enforcement of regulations for free standing portable signs and window.
According to P&Z director Laurence Bradley, only the following prohibitions will remain in effect under the suspension, which will stay in effect until Jan. 31, 2011:
? Signs cannot be permanently installed in the ground.
? Signs cannot be attached to an immovable object, for example, a light post. They must be portable or self-supporting.
? Signs cannot be located off-site or in a public or private area. They must be on-premises.
? Signs cannot affect pedestrian traffic or block sight lines for drivers.
? Only one sign per tenant per property can be displayed during business hours.
Planning and Zoning staff will continue to enforce these regulations and take action if they are not followed. The commission is currently working on new sign regulations but will seek no public comment or take any actions before Sept. 30, when the current temporary suspension expires.
