The Planning and Zoning Commission told the Parks and Recreation Commission it needs to clear up some questions about its request for a special use permit for Irwin Park.
The planners voted Tuesday to continue a public hearing on the request while the recreation commission does its homework.
PZC Chairman Laszlo Papp said the recreation commission needed to spell out what kinds of events would need only recreation board approval and what kind would also need an OK from the PZC.
"There are discrepancies between what is on the table and what we've heard," Papp said.
Recreation officials want the permit so they can host events at the park without going through lots of red tape. Because the park is in a residential zone, applicants often need approvals from both the recreation commission and the PZC.
Several residents living near Irwin Park spoke out against the request, fearing that taking away the extra hurdle would pave the way for more disruptive events.
Paul Vigano said ceding decisions to the recreation commission could give some events "blanket" approval. "Why would you give them a blank check?" Vigano said.
Recreation Director Steve Benko said the PZC may have been confused about the application because of other information presented, including a long-term master plan for the park.
"It can be resolved. It's not a major crisis," Benko said, adding that the rec commission would "not have carte blanche" on all Irwin Park events.
Town Attorney Christopher Jarboe said there are certain deed restrictions from the Irwin family that would remain in place even under the proposed permit.
