Local businesses, the Putnam Valley Federation of Teachers, the Civil Service Association, and community members are coming together to support reading.

Jenette Mistretta,  assistant principal of Putnam Valley Elementary School, spearheads the program and donations have been made throughout the year to support weekly prizes for participants.

"Our young friends are coming in with big smiles and reading logs filled with great books," said Mistretta. "We are so happy to see the kids and hear about all the exciting things they are doing this summer. Our book borrowing tables are set up and we are encouraging our families to stop by and grab a good book. We are very grateful to all of our local community sponsors for donating our weekly prizes."

The district is using social media to keep the conversation going. High school teachers are tweeting about the books they are reading this summer and the middle school suggested reading lists have been posted on Facebook.

Superintendent Dr. Frances Wills said, "The Putnam Valley School District is on a mission to encourage student reading this summer. We are promoting the role of family and community in motivating students to become proficient and eager readers. We want our students to enjoy reading and to build the literacy skills that are critical components of full participation as life-time learners and citizens."
