The lighting change will start on Thursday, Aug. 7, and last for a week, according to the announcement, which also notes that the Military Order of the Purple Heart is involved and the lights are being provided by Entergy.

“Putnam County greatly appreciates and recognizes the commitment and sacrifices made by our military service members and their families,” Odell said in a statement. “As the first Purple Heart County in New York, lighting our historic courthouse for a week starting Aug. 7 will act as a reminder to all of the true cost of our freedom.”

The announcement also details the history of the Purple Heart, which is for soldiers killed or wounded in combat, noting that it was authorized on Aug. 7, 1782, by Gen. George Washington as a Badge of Military Merit.

The historic courthouse is in downtown Carmel, adjacent to Route 52.
