As the cameraman directed people to nudge curtains, Beryl Buck Miller and Jenniann C. Barile settled on a small couch. While Miller was back in Westport to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Longshore Women's Golf Association, Barile wanted to add Miller's memories of celebrities, golf and the country club to a growing video archive.
The 88-year-old Miller is comfortable in front of the camera. She sang in the Big Band era, she produced the Longshore Follies for years and somewhere in the mix became a master in the Ladies Professional Golf Association. Her LPGA touring life did end a bit abruptly though, over an autograph for a young child. After signing it she turned away and told a friend, I cant do this. I miss my kids so much.
That was decades ago. She doesnt play as much anymore, maybe twice a week if the weather is good. She lives in North Carolina and her boys are not there with her. Greg Buck Jr. runs his own course in Maine. She visits when she can. He took the time to get her to Westport for the 50th anniversary of the Longshore Womens Golf Association, Tuesday, July 20.
Her other son, Gary, is one of an ever increasing group of friends and family waiting for her in the great golf course in the sky. A car accident left him hospitalized for 13 days before he died. You know, we had to pay to fix the utility pole, said Beryl, as lightheartedly as she could.
While Miller was in town to celebrate the founding of the LWGA, Barile and the Longshore 50th Anniversary Committee had arranged to add her to the a growing collection of video testimonials. Miller said she was pleased to offer her insights, but it was obvious she was equally happy for the opportunity to reunite with friends on the green.
