Grace Capuano, Kristin DeSouza and Julia Salinaro are Hastings High School seniors set to graduate next month with one more appointment on their high school athletic careers to keep.
The Hastings softball team, led by the senior tri-captains who are otherwise busy with finals and graduation plans, join dozens of area high school baseball and softball players and their teams preparing to compete in Section 1 postseason tournaments beginning on May 27.
Weve had an up and down season (8-8 won-lost record), so it would be nice to win a game or two in the tournament since its our last year, said Salinaro. We lost our best pitcher recently and that is big. Well go out and try hard to get a win.
Capuano knows the competition will be strong. The Yellow Jackets will most likely face one of the top three seeds when brackets are revealed on May 25. Hastings plays in Class B where Rye Neck and Valhalla are the top-rated teams.
Well play one of the better teams and thats a challenge, Capuano said. If we can hit the ball and play good defense, you never know. An upset would be nice.
Yellow Jackets co-coaches Alyson Funn and Melissa Otovich put their team through a practice session Tuesday after their scheduled opponent forfeited on the last day of the regular season.
We havent been able to put together a game when everyone played well at one time, Otovich said. Wed like to see what happens if we can just play well together.
