UPDATED 9:40 p.m.: Power has been restored to the area of Saugatuck Avenue after an outage caused by a transformer fire early Tuesday evening.
As of 9:40 p.m., CL&P reported no power outages in Westport. According to a reader on Twitter, power was restored shortly before 9:30 p.m. after being out since about 5 p.m.
ORIGINAL STORY: A fire broke out on a utility pole near the on-ramp of Interstate 95 north at Exit 17 in Westport, causing the transformer to explode and leaving many in the area of Saugatuck Avenue without power Tuesday night.
According to Westport Fire Lt. Joe Izzo, the problem began at about 5 p.m. after a wire on top of the pole caught fire. As of 7:30 p.m., Connecticut Light & Power crews were on the scene making repairs. Full power might not be restored until midnight, Izzo said.
Due to the power outage, Westport police were directing traffic at the on/off-ramp at Exit 17 because the traffic signal at Saugatuck Avenue and Park Street was out. A portion of Saugatuck Avenue was closed by police as CL&P crews worked on the pole.
According to CL&P, 124 Westport customers were without power as of 8 p.m.
