Power Losses Mount in Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. — More than 17,590 customers are without power in Stamford as Irene moves toward the area Sunday morning. Mayor Michael Pavia said crews would not work to restore power until the storm has passed.

“With the center of the storm rapidly approaching our area, I have ordered that all nonessential and nonemergency vehicles and pedestrians to stay in their homes and remain off city streets,” Pavia said early Sunday morning. “Currently, there are many streets that have downed trees and wires and are impassable. Conditions are unsafe for travel. Do not attempt to go outdoors.”

Irene was downgraded to a tropical storm just before arriving in Connecticut. High tide and the storm are expected before noon.

If you have a life-threatening emergency, call 911. Downed trees and wires should be reported to the Citizens Service Center at 203-977-4140.
