Poughkeepsie’s Academic and Career Excellence academy (PACE), a program for seventh- through 12th-graders housed in the former Christopher Columbus Elementary School on South Perry Street, came under scrutiny after state education officials visited the building and found it only had a certificate of occupancy for a vacant building, The Poughkeepsie Journal reported.
The school district contends the building was listed as vacant due to a paperwork error and was not known to be unsafe, The Poughkeepsie Journal said.
A re-inspection of the school was ordered in September, and while the results have not been made public, the state told the Poughkeepsie Journal that all relevant issues have been addressed.
Meanwhile, in response to concerns raised by some parents, students and staff, the district announced it was updating emergency response plans and taking other steps, such as improving student scheduling, the Poughkeepsie Journal said.
