Former Chief Thomas Mauro stepped down in 2015 and Spero has been interim chief ever since, The Poughkeepsie Journal reported.
Spero had passed a promotional exam in 2008, but was formally hired last week in spite of the fact that his eligibility expired in 2012 because, The Poughkeepsie Journal article said, of a certain provision under Civil Service Law.
According to townpolice.net, Spero joined the department in 1988.
Spero, who holds undergrad degrees in professional studies and public administration, is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and is a founding member of the Poughkeepsie department’s Polygraph Unit, according to townpolice.net.
He has been a patrol officer, patrol sergeant, traffic sergeants, lieutenant, and patrol captain, townpolice.net said.
