The U.S. Census Bureau released figures from the American Community Survey on Tuesday.
The national survey found the average one-way daily commute for workers throughout the country was 25.5 minutes, with one in four commuters working out of their county. People who commuted by public transportation were more likely to have longer commute times and New York had the highest rate of long commutes.
"The average travel time for workers who commute by public transportation is higher than that of workers who use other modes," Brian McKenzie, a Census Bureau statistician said in a statement. “For some workers, using transit is a necessity, but others simply choose a longer travel time over sitting in traffic.”
Throughout Westchester County, more than 82,000 residents commuted to jobs in a different county in 2010, the study found. That was the 36th highest amount for a county in the nation.
The average length of those trips was compiled by WNYC in a map of the area. The longest commute in Westchester is for residents in a section of Somers, who traveled an average of 53 minutes to work in each direction, data shows.
In Yonkers, the average commute to work took roughly 30 minutes, with residents in the eastern part of the city making the longest trip at 36 minutes, the data showed.
