DARIEN, Conn. Protesters arent the only ones getting ready for Occupy Darien. Darien police officers are prepared for the event in case things get out of hand, Capt. Fred Komm said.
We have to plan for a major event. We cant be unprepared, Komm said Wednesday. Police officers will be on hand during the demonstration, which will likely cost the town in overtime.
The cops are planning for high attendance for the protest at Tilley Pond Park next week, though they are not sure how many people will show up. The organizer, Margaret Rague, sat down with First Selectman Jayme Stevenson, Selectman Dave Campbell, Town Administrator Karl Kilduff, Komm and Police Capt. Gary Pavia to discuss the event.
Komm said they told Rague that no fires or camping would be allowed in the park, as dictated by town ordinances. They asked that anyone who decides to partake in the event come by train, because parking will be limited.
Police officers will be stationed at the Darien train station to help people cross the street to Tilley Pond Park, where the protest will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 21 and 22. Lakeside Avenue may have to be closed for the event, Komm said.
Since the event will be taking place during the day, music will be permitted as long as it not absurdly loud. Rague will be providing generators and port-a-johns, but Komm said that she will not be providing food or beverages.
Komm said the meeting between Rague and officials was a cordial discussion that lasted about 30 minutes. The meeting took place after Ragues arrest on drunken and disorderly charges, but no mention of the incident was made. She agreed to let officials know when she has a clearer idea of who will be appearing.
