NEW CANAAN, Conn. His foot got stuck that's what an elderly driver told police after motor vehicle accident Tuesday caused the evacuation of several businesses.
As police continued to investigate Wednesday, Sgt. Carol Ogrinc said an 84-year-old New Canaan man was attempting to leave a parking space on Burtis Avenue at about 3:48 p.m. Tuesday when his foot got caught between the brake and accelerator pedals of his 2004 Lexus.
Ogrinc said the car traveled backward and hit the rear of the Chase Bank building. When the driver tried to shift the car into neutral, he instead put it in drive and then went onto Cherry Street, where his car hit a parked Nissan station wagon. That station wagon then hit propane tanks behind Fishtales restaurant. The minor propane spill forced police to evacuate businesses in the area.
The driver, who was not identified by police because he had not been charged, was taken to Norwalk Hospital for evaluation, Ogrinc said.
