The Fathers Day weekend brings a number of historic, cultural and entertaining things to do in the City of Peekskill.
Saturday marks the citys first ever Juneteenth Celebration. Juneteenth is the oldest continuously celebrated African American Holiday commemorating the emancipation from slavery. The Parade starts on Park Street at 2 p.m. and a kickoff event will be held at the viewing station on Nelson Avenue in front of the library starting at 1 p.m. There will be a full slate of events taking place for the rest of the day at Riverfront Green Park, including a gospel concert and an R&B concert as well as vendors.
In conjunction with Juneteenth the city will conduct Underground Railroad tours starting at The Fern Tree, located at 13 South Division Street. The tours will detail the citys role in helping slaves escape to freedom. The tours will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Saturday night is the annual Red Carpet Gala at the Paramount Center for the Arts, this year featuring classic rock guitar legend Peter Frampton. Shows starts at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $95-150. Advance sales for Paramount members will only run until Friday, June 17 at noon. Member discounts are not available for this performance.
The Peekskill Farmer's Market will also be held Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Bank Street. Come shop for plants, baked goods, honey, maple syrup, cheeses and other locally made products. On Sunday, the Peekskill Attic Treasurers Flea Market will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Bank Street. Come search for clothes, shoes, electronics, books, video games and tons more.
Also on Sunday, The Paramount Center for the Arts presents "Opera in Cinema - La Traviata at 3 p.m. The film is of the opera based on the play "La dame aux camellias" by Alexandre Dumas.The role of the courtesan Violetta is considered one of the most challenging in the soprano repertoire. The opera was composed by Giuseppe Verdi, conducted by Antonio Pappano and directed by Richard Eyre. It stars Renée Fleming. The opera is sung in Italian with English subtitles. Running time is two hours 16 minutes plus one intermission. Admission is $15.
