Are you looking for the perfect dining spot? The one where everyone knows your name? Then cheer up, Fairfield County. New Canaans Pine Social may just be the place youve been searching for.
This gastro-pub, nestled on Pine Street, is marked by wood accents, lighting that flatters everyone and a convivial atmosphere that lives up to its moniker. Pine Social possesses something of a country-club style, minus the attitude. Its cozy. Sidle up to the bar most nights and youll be greeted by the charming Ursula. An intuitive bartender, Ursula is happy to recommend a wine by the glass (she directed my friend to a spectacular Super-Tuscan) or let you peruse the menu in peace.
We take staffing very seriously, says General Manager Michael Moroney. Our staff training is pretty extensive. It definitely shows in the ease with which the staff can guide you toward something youll enjoy. We take the same approach to wine training. You tell me a white you like, and Ill be able to suggest a red youll like as well, says Michael.
On the night I Pine Socialized, my meal was every bit as enjoyable as the surroundings, thanks to the special touch of Chef Adam Truelove. We started with a salad of arugula, red and golden beets, warm goat cheese croutons the size of my palm and glazed walnuts in a citrus vinaigrette, and a dish of creamy, homemade polenta topped with spicy sausage and mixed pepper ragout. Thats my absolute favorite, said Ursula when she saw the unmistakable look of delight on my face as I dug in.
We followed that up with a slow braised beef short rib that truly slid off the bone without an ounce of coaxing. It was beautifully paired with crispy potato gnocchi and crispy shallots. We also sampled one of the evenings specials, a juicy sirloin with a side of béarnaise and mashed potatoes. It took some doing, but we were able to make room for their homemade cheesecake, drizzled in a berry puree.
Perhaps inspired by the name, the bar crowd was open and friendly, and most everyone was eager to offer their thoughts on New Canaans newest social spot. This place is as good as it gets, said Jeff Dietz, a New Canaanite who was seated next to me. No attitude, great food. They have the best burger around.
Thursday through Saturday nights, Pine Social further heats up the social scene with live music in the lounge at the front of the restaurant. It gets a little livelier those nights, Michael says. But we situate it so that those who still want a more intimate dining experience can have that in the dining room. We want everyone to leave smiling.
Its safe to say that most do.
